There is a definite pattern in the way women on the left talk about Obamas – both of them, but especially about Michelle O. They call her”accomplished”, “successful”, even “educated” (as if it some sort of a marvel…sounds a bit condescending to me…one might even say-gash-racist! But I digress).
They site her Ivy League credential and her Law degree, they go as far as admire her “personal style”, her “elegance”, some even shamelessly crown her “beautiful”. They would attribute her inability to dress in anything but mail-order catalog selection to “confidence“. There was one documented case of calling Mrs.Obama “an Amazon“.
As much as their urge to hold on to their fantasy image of poster girl, no matter the evidence, is understandable, and their desperation to put blinders to their eyes is so human – one can even sympathize with such determination – the ears of ugliness stick out* from under their idol all over the place.
Despite my general dislike of the medium I have to admit here: Twitter do has its uses. Your Humble Servant, one of the authors from my new WordPress blogroll acquisition, DirtyRottenScoundrels, unrolls the story:
I saw a note slide across the #TCOT feed on Twitter last night that mentioned Michelle Obama had no law license. This struck me as odd, since (a) she went to school to be a lawyer, and (b) she just recently held a position with the University of Chicago Hospitals as legal counsel — and that’s a pretty hard job to qualify for without a law license.
(S)He goes on, presenting a pretty good piece of investigative journalism (somebody has to do it – if the professional journos are too afraid!).
From my own experience with State licensing board, I can concur with his/her conclusions. Among rush of the last December final drawing set submittal on a big 2-year construction project I totally forgot to send my every-3-year license fee to Albany. When I remembered and contacted the NY State Office of the Professions, worried that I will have my license lapsed, they have assured me that once I’ve been licensed – I’m licensed for life; it’s the registration that has to be renewed. The only exception to this rule is when a licensed professional is disciplined by the Regents for professional misconduct– and that’s a pretty scandalous and rare occasion. I think it’s safe to assume Illinois has similar licensing rules and procedures.
So, if anyone knows a professional licensed by the State of Illinois, can you ask him/her, what is the legal condition when a license is “Voluntarily Surrendered”, and another when it is “Voluntarily retired”?
That makes me wonder…would I dare? would I?…yes, I will: it makes me wonder how soon the Oval Office chair might be surrendered? Voluntarily, of course.

*Russian idiom “уши торчат”. Same meaning, roughly, as in “Potemkin village”. Can’t think of American equivalent at the moment.

Potemkin Village sounds about right, although the emperor has no clothes is what I was thinking.
The fact that she might not have a law license wouldn’t necessarily surprise me. Bernie Madoff’s firm was never licensed by the SEC, despite the fact that it had over three thousand clients, and managed billions of dollars in investments.
The fact that the left-especially the mainstream media-can’t utter anything but praise for anything touching, no matter how remotely, upon the Obama family would be highly amusing if these people weren’t in control of the levers of government.
The effusive praise for Michelle Obama-pretending that she somehow resembles Stacy Dash-is but the most bizarre manifestation of this tendency. I’ve seen lifelong transients living in the Bowery who have a better fashion sense.

Gerard, it’s not that she didn’t have a license – she voluntarily surrendered it. There is a difference- and the author of the article is correct that it smells bad.
Also, to have a private co and three thousand clients w/o once showing them your license is normal; after all, it depends on a client to ask for proper documentation, if they are so inclined. If they asked, and were not obliged, they had a choice – to consider other factors and go ahead with their business relationship with Mr. Madoff, or cut it at that point. We’ll never know how many people did the latter.
In case of someone employed by a major hospital corporation in capacity of a legal council, who doesn’t have a license to practice Law is something else entirely. When you apply for a job that requires license you’re supposed to bring that license with you to the interview, to be examined by a company you’re going to be working for – because by employing you, they assume legal responsibility for your misrepresentation. If you impersonate a licensed professional while in their employ, they are liable for law suits.

Yeah, I suppose I wasn’t thinking about it in that way, but you’re right.
I honestly had no idea what she was responsible for when she was working for that hospital. The part that intrigued me was the fact that she was promoted-with a healthy raise-after her husband earmarked funds for her employer.

Probably for nothing that required any semblance of actual work, as opposed to endlessly bloviating on the supposedly repressed rights of the minorities and to be present at various “events” – to be a rep for somebody with real power, in her case – her husband.
And the funny part is – she continues in the same manner – again, having no merit, no qualification, but being legally related to someone with real power!
She’s a member of Nomenklatura.

The reaction among their devotees is fascinating in a perverse sort of way. It does remind you of the residents of some opaque totalitarian dictatorship, cf. the memoir written by Oleg Kalugin. When he was at the Institute for Foreign Languages, training to be a KGB operative, and had a conversation with his mother where they discussed Stalin’s death. And her reaction, of course, “our father has died.” “Not only our father, but God…”
Somehow uttering a criticism-no matter how banal, or deserving-of the Obamas is their (ostensibly) secular equivalent of blasphemy, or apostasy.

I’m glad you understand the parallels.
I’m amazed at Dems (Ok, they are Dems – but still, these are people who graduated college, at some point in their lives!) who totally believe that “this is a groundbreaking times”, and “the leader of this caliber and such unquestionable love of millions had never happened to any other country!” hype.
What’s the point of arguing with village idiots? It’s just that sometimes it feels whole village gone mad – but hey, this feeling is familiar, too.

I didn’t know about the law license surrender. Sounds suspicious. Thanks. I want to dig into it now.
She is depressingly, what, phony, maybe is the word. He broke ground in getting elected and she tags along as most spouses do. Otherwise she brings next to nothing to the party. Not that he brings much more.
The real pity is that they are both affirmative action products. They’ve read about the genuine suffering of their elders, and benefited from the programs to try to ameliorate the past, but neither is authentic. Not like Rice or Powell would have been, though I don’t know much about Rice and disagree with Powell’s politics.
Had you noticed the rhapsody some pundits apply to her body? Specifically her arms. It seems to me to be pretty blatant racism. Here’s the latest example:

She’s healthy, so she doesn’t have to prove anything? She’s going to various agencies telling them what administration wants to do and thus embracing America?
Wow.
It’s worse than I thought.
The word “accomplished”, I think, was repeated 5 times. Are they treating this as an advertisement, pounding the message so at the end it’ll make the fictitious – true?
Yes, that would be very interesting indeed if somebody with proper journalistic skills can dig to the bottom of the story.

If she did have a problem with the Illinois Bar it’s probably off limits to inquirers, simply because of her position, but it’s worth a try. As I recall, her alma mater put her dissertation off limits after someone publically criticized it, I forget who.

If this progresses, the next big shot will be a “liberator” who’ll announce Glastnost and claim he came to clean up the stables from conspiratorial excesses of the previous Administration.

She chose not to renew her license. Its inactive. This is not black mark, she is not subject of disciplinary action, she chose not to renew. A number of lawyers who leave private practice to work for corporations, or in-house positions may hold an inactive license. Most corporations in-house counsel are more managerial/business type positions than actually litigating cases (that’s what they hire outside counsel for). Also, when you move to a different state, you may still be licensed in the old state, but surrender that license, or carry it as inactive.
But, since all of you want something scandalous to hate about Michelle Obama, you probably won’t be persuaded by the facts.
