Найдено на Craigslist (“Free Russian Piano!Beautiful upright piano made in Russia. Pedal turns it into harpsichord…I can be reached on cell no.000-000-0000”)

In the course of the ongoing effort to furnish my apartment I periodically browse Craigslist for several items. One of them is Round Dining table Ø40-44″ .

On Monday I found one promising-looking item and shoot an email to the seller asking to arrange a viewing.  Someone called Gina answered but appeared unwilling: she could only show me the table either after 9pm weekdays or before 10am on a weekend. Very inconvenient for me. But the price seemed good and the color of the table on the photo appealing, so I emailed back agreeing to come on Sat. She got back with an address – and that was a 2nd warning I missed: on W 104th street in Manhattan.
– “Let’s confirm the day before” – I said -“Also, is there an apartment number?

-“I will text you the number on Fri” -she replied.

But then yesterday she inquired if I want the table only or looking for chairs, too. I said – no, only table. Any normal person reading this reply would take it as a confirmation that I AM interested and, consequently, confirm our appointment for today. There was no calls or texts to my phone yesterday, no messages from Gina, so I assumed there is no change. You already guess what happened next, right?

Me: Hi, I found your ad on Craigslist regarding used closet system you are selling. You said it is 1/3 of retail and in excellent condition. My closet is smaller than yours, it is not a walk-in, and I don’t need all the components. Would you consider selling  parts or only as a package deal?

Let’s start from the beginning.

As some of you know, for several years I have been looking for a place to buy. By “place” I mean an apartment, and “several” means more than three. Now, apartment could be a condo or a coop; as much as I would love to own a condo and be practically my own boss my bank account would not bear it.  Geographically speaking I like my neighborhood, Bay Ridge; have been living here for over 10 years and besides, I believe if I move the terrorists win. Wasn’t looking for a house: 1st, with over $750K median price, it’s definitely out of my reach; 2nd, I have already had a chance to live in a house, all of 8 entertaining years – since it was paid for by a mortgage, I can’t say I owned it, although everyone around use this deceiving verb – and even though the experience was educational, I don’t want to repeat it. 3rd…but two is enough.
