From NYPost today

We were in the welcoming arms of the Ambassadors Theatre Group.

Soon a member of staff came to warn me that I had failed to pull my mask up fast enough after my most recent swig of beer. As the show began, someone with a name badge saying “Libby” came over and told off another member of our group for failing to bring their mask up swiftly enough after sipping another of the overpriced drinks the Lyric Theatre had just sold us.

As the show began, it seemed that Libby (a k a Dolores Umbridge) had identified us as troublemakers. Flagrant sippers. After the lights had gone low, I noticed Libby standing at the end of our row staring down it, hands on hips. There she stayed, glaring through the dark.

To say this distracted from events on stage is an understatement. Impressive though the effects are, the 3¹/₂-hour plot was already pretty arse-numbing. What made it more so was knowing Libby was monitoring us throughout. Whenever she slipped out briefly, another monitor took her place. Eventually, Libby got what she wanted. About an hour into Act 1, she spied through the dark that a female member of our party had failed to replace her mask swiftly enough over her nose and mouth. Libby clambered behind our row in the stalls and startled my friend by spitting at her loudly to pull her mask up.

By the time the interval came, one of my Canadian friends — Jordan Peterson — and I decided it might be a good idea to do that regrettable thing and ask to speak with the manager. We asked. At which point we were reintroduced to Libby. Libby was the manager, and explained that we were under suspicion because our group had already received three warnings for insufficiently speedy remasking after sips. Jordan and I both asked for further guidance on what exactly constituted permissible sip length.

You know what? I’m glad I’ll not be allowed even into the line outside that theater.

[Copying and sharing the post to widen the audience for these brilliant observations- ETat]

As our way of life changed during the last couple of years, so did our language. New slogans and idioms popped up to reflect our new ways of thinking. Many of them were built around the words science, salvation and right vs. wrong. Being a linguist and a…

I was under a misapprehension that proof of pseudo-vaccination is required for employment at companies with more than 100 workers.

Apparently, in NYC that magic number is not a 100.

F.Tallis, Vienna Twilight

I’m watching Vienna Blood series on PBS and parallel read all books in series that I can find in my local digital library.

[n short: night and day. TV stripped all meaning from the books, leaving only “detective fiction”. And even there they didn’t have a courage to follow the author, butchered his plots into a predictable PC-nonsense] But I digress.

Wanted to jot dawn a few quotes from the book.

  • when I was a student, I could not help feeling that some of the professors believed that the job of healing patients was quite incidental to the practice of medicine, and that only autopsies mattered. A different generation, of course, but it is a sobering thought that in their student days treatment was actively discouraged because it might influence the natural progression of symptoms and mislead the pathologist. I was told—and I fear that this might not be apocryphal—that on some wards, the only medicament prescribed was cherry brandy.”
  • A bust of Goethe stood on a pedestal outside the toilets.
  • “Your fare, sir?” Liebermann looked into the man’s dead eyes and saw the end of Austria-Hungary. An empire that produced so many bureaucrats and petty officials would never survive the new century. Here was a man who had been instructed to take fares, and that was what he intended to do, whatever the circumstance. Liebermann sensed all the other men behind him, a great army of automata with grand titles and flamboyant uniforms, operating in every stratum of society—and was too exhausted to argue. He gave the conductor a coin and accepted the ticket.

30

It was a dark and stormy night…actually, a day – but so gloomy there wasn’t much difference.

We came out of the plane with its familiar interior and artificial comfort – and got a reality shock. Customs officers looked at us with suspicious disdain, American English turned out to be incomprehensible, and the geography of the airport – almost impenetrable. Consequent cab trip to Brooklyn revealed the city unlike I’ve ever seen – and certainly not the New York of the movies: dried-blood brick buildings of 2 stories, block after a sad block, low cloudy gray of the skies, cracked pavement and dark-dressed , hurrying people looking strictly under their feet, leaning into the wind.

O Lord, what have we done?!

…In late July, 40,000 truckers, squeezed by price controls and rising costs, tied up transportation in a nationwide strike that lasted 37 days, costing the government US$6 million a day.[15] Two weeks before the coup, public dissatisfaction with rising prices and food shortages led to protests like the one at the Plaza de la Constitución which had been dispersed with tear gas.[16] Allende also clashed with Chile’s largest circulation newspaper El Mercurio. Tax-evasion charges were trumped up against the newspaper and its director arrested.[17] The Allende government found it impossible to control inflation, which grew to more than 300 percent by September,[18] further dividing Chileans over the Allende government and its policies.

Walmart requires the unvaccinated to be escorted by staff as they shop

Those without proof of vaccination are only allowed to buy groceries and pharmacy products.

[…]Under the new rules, those who show proof of vaccination will be free to shop. Those who don’t show proof of vaccination will be told to wait in a blue box until a member of staff is available to escort them as they shop. This member of staff will then follow them around the store and make sure they don’t buy any prohibited goods.

You might argue: they exported the Vindman twins to America (win-win); they supported Hunter Biden’s cocaine habit for six or seven years and paid the mortgage on The Big Guy’s beach house. So, maybe we do owe them.
