- A neighbor across the hallway is leaving: inherited family house in upstate, and the husband was able to transfer to a company branch close to location. Apartment will be rented out, unknown people will move in – and my friend the
cowardlyreserved dachshund Baron will move out, to the green meadows and mysterious woods on the Hudson (supposedly). Sigh. Why this happy occurrence didn’t happen to their right-door neighbor, with 2 young kids and 2 very loud, endlessly yapping terriers?
- Within 5 blocks of me recently went out of business:
-Polish grocery (husband&wife business, moved back to home country; my shopping list of veal pate, marinated garden salad, pierogi with sour cherries, frozen chanterelles and outstanding smoked meats)
-Turkish restaurant “Ali Pasha” (the place is cursed. Before the Turks there were a) an excellent seafood restaurant “Barracuda”, b) Japanese hi-cuisine, beautiful food, c) American fusion with cocktails. All bankrupt)
-Numerous Chinese “Nails” and “Spa Massage”salons.
-two “Smoke shops”: the window displays multiple ugly hookahs looking like giant glass enemas, with their best and most expensive, shaped like Kalashnikov, in the foreground.
–Coffee bar/pastry shop specializing in French macarons; they are $2.75 each, coffee is $4 and there are rarely any customers
-Lebanese grocery: boring interior with endless pakhlava trays behind storefront. A hand-written poster taped to the glass: they will be soon expanding to a Mid-Eastern food restaurant. I wonder if the address is the one recently vacated by Ali Pasha…
