**Blogs that were written with intent to discuss. Not to collect “likes” in the comment section, not to write up author’s day or 2.5 half-baked thoughts that graced his head while he was changing trains, not to post statements or bulletin of author’s pet peeves and/or hobby horses (some of which might be a description of this here blog…).
I miss places like Samizdata of 2005 and Asymmetrical Information of same year, 2Blowhards of 2008, AlarmingNews of 2005-12, ChicagoBoyz of 2010 and Atomic Nerds of 2011. [And others, names redacted by various reasons.] Miss discussion w/o prejudice, pressure or excessive/unfair moderation. At the same time, I never likedother formats of online communication like “chats”, “forums” or “discussion boards”. I miss personal voices of bloghosts.
**Blog bashes. Of the type given by Megan McArdle and Karol [then] Sheinin. I miss meeting strangers in a cafe or a back room of a bar; in split second to get real person and remembered written voice click into coherent impression of someone’s personality. Being able to amend aloud that comment in yesterday’s thread, what unspoken rules of written communication prevented oyu to say – and to find immediate understanding and appreciative audience.
I am nostalgic about one such “blog bash”, almost 9 yrs ago today – Megan arranged a room in some cellar cafe on UES, pretending to be a Turkish odalisque den on a cheap: fringed floor cushions around low tables, smoky twilight, colored projector filters and totally incongruous company of more-or-less libertarian bloggers, coming to greet a visitor from London. Does anyone remember it except me?
What DO you remember? What do you miss?
