For years I have been missing out on fun that is New York’s New Year’s Eve. I have been following same old program of eating festive dinner, raising my champagne glass at midnight to a count from TV, making a wish for new year while the ball drops. There were reasons for it – and I am not saying this time these same reasons will not prevent me from getting out the door – but today I’m at least considering other possibilities.
Let’s see what this city has to offer for someone without a preplanned commitment.
Long, long list of parties at Eventbrite.
*One in particular caught my eye: Art Deco New Year’s Eve Costume Party and Open Bar, @ Catalonia. Pricewise, it’s a 4-tier participation, from #25 for dances (no bar) up to $149 (dances & unlimited premium bar +snacks platter).
*There is also very classy Peacock Alley at Waldorf-Astoria. Dances and dinner-buffet will hit one’s wallet for over $570.
*Next interesting item – party at Hotel Americano, featuring hotel chef’s tasting menu and wine pairing – besides DJ and roof-garden-to-cellar dances. During one of OpenHouses I was a volunteer guide at the hotel, and liked the place very much. The price ticket seems reasonable, too: ~$250.
* Another one is a LES nightclub rooftop celebration at Hotel Chantelle – decorated in 1940’s “grease chic” style, accompanied by bottles of French Widow and costing $2600 for a table of 12, before tips. A bit steep…
* What about FREE? Yep, this is NY, baby, we’ve got everything. There is FREE New Year’s Eve Party sponsored by Fashion Avenue News Magazine, featuring couture fashion show (food +drinks are extra). I bet this one is gotta be crowded and loud.
And then there are dine&dance boat cruises, balls, white-or-black -tie affairs, masquerades, Naughty NewYear parties, Singles NewYear parties, penthouse parties, bashes, comedy show parties, jazz-age Gatsby parties, firework parties…
Ouch, my head hurts already!
Let’s look at something quieter: communal meditation time…night bike ride…walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.
Where do you think I should go?
