How I hate the tactic employed by certain recruiting managers consisting of asking the applicant for a”range of acceptable compensation”!
First, they post description of open position with list of requirements* that suggest someone with outstanding and wide-ranging skills that might be acquired only after 5-7 years of continuous employment at intermediate level, call it “min 3 yrs experience”, then send an email to applicants with question “how much do you want?” In addition, they often claim that position is “full time” but the requested rate is “hourly”. That means they do not intend to put this designer on payroll, because they are not going to provide benefit package.
So, basically, their selection process comes down to “we will hire person with lowest expected pay ->lowest self-esteem -> someone who will kiss our behinds, endure being harassed, made to do work of 3 people, and being paid peanuts – while we can always say we are generously giving him what he asked for”.
Do they seriously expect they will be able to get and retain good employees this way? Or they think their intentions are not transparent to any candidate who qualify their job description?
