There is this interesting stereoscopic effect – sudden absence of work schedule and indefinite free time ahead accompanied by quick seasonal changes are, on one hand, worrisome and anxiety-inducing.
On the other, the [ redacted] IRS finally delivered my refund check for 2012, exactly a year after they were supposed to. I see possibilities. For instance – I could drop everything and travel. Or finish my sweater that I’ve been knitting for ~ a year. Or update you on the state of my Table Project. Or go back to volunteering in local Botanic Garden; &&&.
Speaking of travel: of course, the ultimate place I want to go to is Portugal. But before committing to this not-inexpensive trip I could start close to home. F.ex., I could go to Canada.
Checking Amtrak: Ah! I am in luck: they have a promotion for an Adirondack train that goes roundtrip to Montreal from NYC for mere $89. Checking the dates: it’s only for Thursday-to-Monday travel: fine. But blackout days are April 17,18 and 21: not fine at all. OK, let’s try departure Sunday plus return Thursday, last day of promotion: yep, that works.
What would I do in Montreal, though?
Hmm. I could take a bus and go directly to my favorite place in Canada: Eastman Spa. Yep, same place I was planning to go to before New Year – and in similar circumstances had to cancel.
Let’s see: ah, they too have a promotion! 3rd night at half-price, valid until April 30: perfect.
Now we’re talking. By steps: leaving NY on Sunday morning, enjoying the scenery on my way to the north border; arriving in the evening to train terminal near Old Port. Then riding few stops on the metro to Berri-UQAM, to Central bus station; once there, transfer to Limocar bus to Eastman. In 2hrs I’ll be calling from the Eastman Township’ bus station to the Spa, they’ll pick me up and in 15min I’ll make it for dinnertime. From evening of 20th to 23rd it’ll be exactly 3 nights; after lunch on the 23rd I can take return bus back to Montreal, spend a night in some plush ridiculously-Victorian hotel somewhere on Rue Saint Denis and in the morning take the Adirondack train back to the city. It works!
Or it would’ve worked if the damn Limocar wouldn’t screw up.
Their last bus for the 20th is leaving at 6:30pm -half an hour before arrival of my train! An hr difference, counting metro ride!
No, no, this task is not for a virus-afflicted brain…I gotta go swallow couple of “flu symptoms” gelcaps and go back to that unfinished knitting…
