February behaves like a 5yo in a tantrum. Hopping from tears to screams to laughs and hugs and back again.
It started with scene in the library.
I went with my library card to one of two stationary recording stands; a stand consist of a computer screen, wood surface, plastic tray with motion sensor and a card reader. Motion sensor streams constant red laser light across the plastic tray; as soon as a library card is read by a reader, the screen flashes instruction to place a book, bar code up, on the tray and move it across the red light, card reader recognizes and records the book, and screen instructs to proceed with the next one. So, I slide my card through the card reader and see that machine is broken: there is no red light and the screen indicates no change/didn’t read my card. Behind me stands a guy of about 50-55yo, rather shabby in appearance; he exhibits signs of irritation: loudly sighs, tap his foot, moves his torso, &. I try the card reader couple more times; seeing no change, almost ready to move to the line at next stand.
At this moment the guy behind me explodes; he shouts: put your book on the tray! slide it across the light! move it, I said! I attempt to tell him there is no light, the reader is broken, but he drowns my voice completely; he snatches the book from my hands and pushes it into the tray, yelling all the time: you gotta learn how to use it! don’t waste my time! move it! I stand quiet, waiting for him to see for himself that the machine does not work. Finally he does – but instead of apologizing he yells: don’t you see the reader doesn’t work! don’t stand here like a stupid cow! – and he jumps the line at the next, second stand, right in front of three people!
Today’s only 4th, and it has already brought these:
- friend whom I haven’t seen for half-a-year admitted there was a reason she avoided all meetings: lung cancer. Should I mention she has always been a health freak? No smoking, plenty of fruits and greens in her diet, lean and active (gym 5 times a week for years). She is only 3 years older, a brilliant architect, we’ve known each other for 15 years, I’m friends with her husband, son and DIL; she’s one of my most solid professional references .
- btw, re: those references. I’m in a jam. She’s sick, goes through chemo and her work schedule is uncertain. Another referent, my former PM from 2 companies back, got promoted as a Team Leader …on a project in Ecuador! he plans to move there soon. My third, Principal Partner of the firm, just informed me of change in policy. Last year they have merged (out of necessity) with a non-design, government consulting firm down South and now have to assume new joint rules, one of which is “no personal recommendations from Partners, only official confirmation of employment”. Nice.
- another friend, early-retired at 60, started college. Once he’s been there already, for a couple of years, but then got married in a hurry and needed to provide for a growing family. Now he has a cushy pension, a 2-story house, and energy to complete his History degree, Civil War specialization. With minor in French.
- 22 years ago today me and the family got our Alien cards stamped at JFK’ by immigration official. To think, I have been living in New York longer than in any city I ever resided in my life!
