Demolition was over in 3 days. There were no surprises – all questionable items on the list got confirmed – to the worst. Discoveries were all of a nasty kind, no hidden pots of gold awaited.
Remember that shallow closet that was jutting out into the hall? The one I wanted to flatten along, fit with new shelving and use as a dish cupboard? The one that is new barn door was supposed to be hung over, moving between the cupboard and new bedroom doorway, alternating them open, one at a time? Not gonna happen.
It was jutted out for a reason. Hidden in the corner is an iron vertical I- beam shaped column., 6″ off the hall’s wall. No structural reason for it, no beams or joists above – it’s just there and we can’t touch it. So – no flattening that built-out and no barn door. Instead, we are building that niche again, and just fitting it with new shelving and light.
Another nastie, this one is more costly. The bathroom walls appear to be constructed with no cavity whatsoever. No space to fit shower valve, no space for recessed mirror cabinet. And this. Remember that stepped-in 6″ built-out opposite the shower stock, the one that made the tub shorter? Was there for a reason! (not that I didn’t suspected it) There is another run of sewer pipes there, in addition to the wet wall we already have opposite. That means I can not order normal 60″ bathtub, only 54″. Since I need an acrylic one, not cast iron, the price of tub doubles: in this non-standard size they are made to order. And lead-time: 3 weeks. My contractor already told me: he is not going to wait for all appliances to come in; if there nothing to work with he is moving on to another job.
Kitchen: couldn’t order cabs before demolition; now we know what sort of wall is behind (same kind as bathroom, no cavity but a nasty chunk of rock-solid concrete on the face of it) – so now I do. I did. Found half-decent wholesaler in Jersey and bought the cabs sight unseen, over the phone. When owuld they deliver? They are vague on that…one week? two?
Having trouble with electrician: the guy threw a tantrum that premise is not prepared for him to finish the job in 5 days, as he intended to: no new partitions are constructed yet (hey, GC was only been working for 3 days, doing demo!), no kitchen cabinets are up, he can’t put undercab light, etc. In a meanwhile he installed all receptacles of wrong color, didn’t insert new line to the kitchen, outlets are not aligned – they are all over the place, j-boxes for ceiling light fixtures are not moved where supposed to, in 5 days he didn’t have a chance to study plan I sent him (he insist on disdainfully calling it “schematic”). But he wants the balance of his bill paid! You wouldn’t believe the things he wrote to me; the latest being: “I am coming to your apartment at 7:30am on Monday and getting money to pay my helper, one way or another“.
Don’t know where to hide and what to do…This birthday might be my last, literally.
