In the night woke up 3 times ; don’t remember there being any particular nightmare harassing me. Just internal discomfort. The radiators were burning hot when I went to bed, so I opened windows and removed the blanket. After midnight thermostat turned the building’s heat off (don’t ask me, that’s how our super set it up), and I woke up shivering. Or maybe it was some other reason, sunk in the depths of the night visions. Then I fell into exhausted sleep in the early hours.
Among disintegrating dreams I heard a call. Distant and full Fa Minor sound. Like sighing of a sad giant. Next minute I knew what it was, and it made me smile happily: a siren from the barges anchored in the Narrows. I knew then what I will see in my windows: winter fog. Soft, wet air making the tree branches and the townhouses appear drawn in watercolor, merging in the background into one teary tangle. A watercolor in violet-blue, pinky-beige, ocher and dove-gray.
