What is your comfort food? If you were given a chance to choose what you will be eating for the last time in your life, what dish will you ask for? For many post-Soviets, I suspect, that would be salad Olivier (in various personal interpretations), wherever they happen to live now.

For several years already I would have to answer that question with bigos. I can never have enough of it. Yes, I’m forced to admit: my tastes are rather plebeian. And you?

Comfort food, I think, is usually very simple food. Fried chicken. French fries. Hot biscuits with honey. Cherry pie for dessert.
Can you find yourself suddenly craving your comfort food after months of forgetting about it (like cherry pie, f.i.) – so much so that when you get it you can’t stop until the whole thing finished?
Yes. Emotional eating. I have vast experience of it. In such instances, and speaking only for myself: I use food as a drug addict uses a drug: to dull my fear or pain or sadness, i.e. to avoid reality for a while. But that is just me. You may use comfort food for other reasons.
That I do, too -but what food, in particular, does not make much difference in such instances, nor the taste of it much matter.
Bigos, on the contrary, comes as a pleasant fancy; just one day I walk pass Polish store, whiff of smoked cuts reaches me and suddenly I am craving bigos. Then I make a whole big cast-iron casserole of it – and eat a full plate…and take seconds… 3 times! Until I’m satiated to my ears.
Last meal? Grilled steak and baked potato with butter and sour cream, and corn on the cob. Not sure if it’s comfort food or not, though.
Mac and cheese with tuna and peas, salsbury steak in cream of mushroom soup, different kinds of bean soups (ham and beans, black eyed peas, split peas as examples), meat loaf, well, now I’m getting hungry.
Jeff, your split pea soup was haunting me for days!
That’s a big menu you have there and a good appetite. DId you always have had the same preferences?
When I was a teenager my favorite food was cold mashed potatoes, for leftovers. I would eat it straight from the pot when I’d returned from school, and I liked it to be extra-salty. I don’t think anybody in my family know. I was crazy about it. Now I can’t understand it at all.
Comfort food –
I am an enormous fan of what is categorized as peasant type food such as jambalaya, cassoulets, etc. For the last meal though it would probably be barbequed ribs with baked beans and cornbread.
Based on this tiny poll, majority would prefer something simple, peasant-style. Except my friend Kira above – she’d like oysters, sashimi, truffles and champagne.
Always wanted to know – what makes beans “baked”? isn’t it simply beans sauteed in tomato sauce, on top of the stove? or they are supposed to be cooked in the oven?
Sometimes they are baked, but most of the time they are actually stewed. Baked beans is just a name for that type of dish, basically.
Aha. Thanks, Dan
I hated bell peppers, onion and tomato in dishes as a child. Can’t live without ‘em now.
Oh, man, cornbread! With ham and beans!
And there are also Boston Baked Beans as well.
What’s the difference between Boston Baked Beans and plain baked beans? Bostonians put oysters in it?
iirc the Boston Style “baked” beans have a different flavor due to the addition of molasses.
Bah that was me above, I use dfm other places.
I got it, Dan, no worries.
Molasses! So it’s sweet, sort of like Japanese bean ice cream?
definitely sweeter than the standard baked beans you see a lot of places
Hey, Dan – OffTop:
did you hear Congress put a stop on Feds’ requirement for LEED Gold on all government buildings?
see buildinggreen.com:
The U.S. Congress is calling a halt to certain military spending on green building in a newly passed defense authorization bill (H.R. 1540). The bill prohibits use of Department of Defense funds to achieve LEED Gold or Platinum, with waivers possible if a cost-benefit analysis for the project can demonstrate payback. Exceptions may also be made without a special waiver if achieving Gold or Platinum “imposes no additional cost.”
haha that is a good one – I am glad I don’t live in the LEED world too much
I should add that when faced with an actual last meal request, it looks like fried chicken, burgers and steaks win. Typically the inmates are restricted to what is in the prison kitchen though, so it isn’t exactly scientific, but interesting nonetheless.

There are a few other sites that have recorded last meal requests too.
Gosh, I only meant it metaphorically! and sure, somebody already made a website of it – with factual data…Prisons are so convenient for statistician – captive audience, indeed
“captive audience” lol
